Addressing the Cashier Who Left Me Completely Speechless – Kudos to You

This occurred on a day of rest, and I was sufficiently irritable, topping off my mother's vehicle. It was a typical gas station that doubles as a grocery store, so you run the risk of joining a queue customers carrying goods of pricey provisions. A terrible fate to occur when your only desire is to get gasoline and leave. Dreadful.

Fourth in line I stood in the waiting line. There was only person serving, a young woman. A peculiar quality to her presence. When the faffer at the first position had completed payment for his purchases, his sausage roll, and his box of eggs, It seemed to me I heard the cashier bid him a wonderful day. Odd. Perhaps I’d misheard, or maybe she did say it and used a mocking tone. The thought crossed my mind if perhaps she was a supporter in the war on delays, sharing my contempt for individuals slowing down people just getting gas including me.

Advancing next, to third in the queue. The new leader of the queue finished pumping gas with commendable speed. Once more it happened: “Wishing you a marvelous day.” To be precise, it was “enjoy a truly great day”. An American? Here in Stourbridge? Her tone suggested it, and few locals wishes anyone a wonderful day, or simply a good day. Quite out of place. Rarely does one encounter many Americans visiting this town, certainly not holding jobs in fueling spots or anywhere else.

Now I stood second. Following a senior shopper engaged in a lengthy struggle with her carryall, her food items, her wallet and her membership pass. The process dragged on. When she was done, she too was wished to have a fantastic day. Yes, American for sure. I could have confirmed it by saying something hilarious at the cashier, to see if she did that response as they gaze at you, stoically, and state very earnestly: “You are very amusing.” However, nothing occurred of anything hilarious to utter.

Ultimately, I accepted the heartfelt tone – or a performance of it, that equates to identical in effect – as she gazed me right in the eye, piercingly, and told me to have a great day. My spirits lifted. Beneficial indeed.
