Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, most notably the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he began working on outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as several ensembles for her US tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world says farewell to a authentic original whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
