A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
