England to Start UEFA Euro 2028 Quest at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium

England’s men’s team will commence their Euro 2028 journey at the Manchester City’s stadium, on the condition that they attain the anticipated qualification for a tournament hosted across the majority of the UK and the Ireland.

The Etihad Stadium has not hosted an English men’s game since the spring of 2016, when the Turkish team were defeated 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to host the national team for their opening fixture on a Saturday in June 2028.

The English side are scheduled to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley, but, should they win Group B, their knockout stage opener would be held at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean beginning the playoffs at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Tournament Launch and Rally

The tournament was unveiled at an event in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday evening. High-ranking officials from the tournament organizers and the organizing bodies were confronted as they arrived the location by about 50 protesters, who demanded Israel’s national side to be kicked out from international football because of the conflict in Gaza.

Placards were held up with messages stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters called out: “Kick Israel out.”

Event Timeline

The inaugural fixture of the tournament will be held at the the national stadium of Wales in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a game that will involve the Welsh team if they qualify.

Wembley will host both semi-finals and the final, which will be played on July 9, 2028 with a commencement at late afternoon.

It is hoped that an earlier start, which will also be used for Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will attract families and help engage a broader range of fans.

Host Nations

The Ireland are due to play their initial fixture at the Dublin Arena and Scotland would play similarly at Hampden Park.

The national sides of all four hosts will enter the preliminary stage; two automatic spots will be reserved for any that miss out on the tournament through that route.

Stadiums and Playoffs

Villa Park and The North London arena finalize the nine tournament locations. All will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals played at the national stadium of each host.

The draw for the qualifiers will be staged in the Northern Irish capital, which was removed as a tournament location last year when it emerged Casement Park could not be upgraded in time, on a date in late 2026.
