Rúben Neves saved the day for the Portuguese side with a last-gasp winning goal in their World Cup match against the Republic of Ireland, following the Irish goalkeeper had saved a penalty from the veteran forward.
The Wolves midfielder headed home during added time to claim a narrow win, four years after the star striker had bagged a brace late on to overcome a resilient Irish side.
The Irish squad looked set to leave Lisbon with a hard-fought point, but in the end suffered defeat, despite regaining a good deal of honor with a gritty display that erased some of the memories of last month’s disappointing loss in Armenia.
However, the loss puts them facing elimination, with their first three qualifying group games having produced only a single point. They must beat Armenia in Dublin on Tuesday to maintain any chance of claiming a playoff place.
The Hungarian team boosted their hopes of qualifying by picking up their first win with a 2-0 victory over the Armenian side, climbing above their opponents into the runner-up spot behind Portugal in the standings. Daniel Lukacs gave Hungary the lead in the first half and Zsombor Gruber secured the points in late stoppage time.
Serbia suffered a narrow defeat at home to the Albanian squad, with the outcome meaning England can now secure their qualification from their qualifying group by defeating Latvia on Tuesday. Rey Manaj netted the only goal for Albania with a well-taken shot in late added time.
The Latvian side difficulties in their group persisted as they were held to a 2-2 tie at home by the Andorran team. An Andorran player scored for the away side late on from time to claim them their first point of the qualifiers and extend Latvia’s winless run to several matches.
Spain maintained their dominant Group E run with a 2-0 win over the Georgian side after goals from a Spanish attacker and Mikel Oyarzabal in the match venue. The result continued the title holders’ perfect run in qualifying, having scored 11 goals in three games without letting in a goal.
In spite of the unavailability of players such as Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, and Rodri due to fitness issues, the Spanish squad showcased their dominance against a Georgian team that passed most of the match sitting back. The home side controlled the match with more than 80% of the ball, and the visitors did not have a single attempt on target or create a clear chance, with only goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili preventing a heavy defeat.
The scorer broke the deadlock in the first half from a expertly taken set-piece move, and his compatriot secured the win in the 64th minute with a stunning free kick after the Georgian keeper had denied a Spanish player’s penalty.
Gennaro Gattuso commented: “We’re not thinking about the group leaders or our next opponents. We are aware of our responsibilities.”
Italy failed to qualify for the last two World Cups, on two occasions missing out in the qualifying rounds, and the dreaded backdoor route now appears their primary chance after the Norwegian team’s comprehensive win over Israel in their qualifying group. The Norwegians are leading on 18 points from six matches. The Italians have 12 points with a game in hand on their competitors and are three points ahead of Israel. The Estonian squad remain fourth on three points. The group winners qualify directly for the World Cup, with the runners-up entering the playoffs.
The Italian national team face Israel on Tuesday, where a victory would cement second spot and, while they can still theoretically overtake the group leaders on points, the Norwegians’ far superior goal difference means a qualifying place probably awaits for the Italian squad.
