New Year Partygoers Advised to Dress Warmly with Snow Expected Throughout the UK

Forecasters are saying a chilly commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely over large parts of the UK. Celebrants have been told to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Proceed In Spite of Alerts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay celebrations are set to go ahead, following last year's calling-off. This is in spite of advisories for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," noted the national forecaster.

Displays Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and good visibility. The mercury are forecast to be low, making additional clothing essential, as per forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, advisories are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are expected on public transport.

Temperatures Forecast to Plummet Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to hit the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Advisories Issued

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials stated this indicated the weather could to trigger notable consequences across the NHS and care systems. This involves a likely increase in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
