10. The Percussionist Sarathy Korwar – There Is Beauty, There Already

An album consisting of a single, extended movement of insistent drumming might not seem the most approachable musical proposition. But, south Asian drummer and composer Sarathy Korwar turns this insistent rhythm into a unexpectedly magnetic piece. Leading an group of three drummers, Korwar develops a intricate percussive vocabulary over the record's 10 movements. The work references the phasing techniques of Steve Reich as well as traditional Indian musical phrasing, all anchored in the repetition of a persistent, thrumming figure. Number Eight: The Mexican Producer Debit – Desaceleradas

From Mexico producer Debit specializes in uncanny reworkings of historical sounds. For her most recent project, Desaceleradas, she zeroes in on the 90s style of cumbia rebajada – a slowed, dub-inflected take of the shuffling Latin American dance genre. Debit decelerates this sound to a near-halt, running its signature synths and off-beat rhythm through veils of sludge and static to produce a fresh, foreboding rhythm. Sometimes ambient and discomfiting, Debit converts the celebratory dancefloor sound of cumbia into a persistent, ethereal memory.

7. The São Paulo Producer DJ K – Liberator Radio!

Sheer intensity is the key term for the music of São Paulo producer Kaique Vieira, AKA DJ K. Coining his own genre of "bruxaria" (witchcraft), Vieira layers a cacophony of sirens, pummeling bass tones and shouted lyrics on top of the classic Brazilian genre of baile funk. This emulates the propulsive sound of favela street parties. On his follow-up release, Radio Libertadora!, Vieira cranks up the ferocity, adding everything from techno kick drums to the sound of the Islamic call to prayer into his unruly bruxaria mix. The result is a particularly hyperactive and overwhelmingly noisy forty-minute listening experience. Surrender to the cacophony and Vieira's bold productions become strangely exhilarating.

6. Mohinder Kaur Bhamra – Disco Punjabi

Sikh devotional singer Mohinder Kaur Bhamra's early-80s release of disco beats and traditional Punjabi tunes is a newly appreciated masterpiece. Recorded by her son, music producer Kuljit Bhamra, Punjabi Disco's ten tracks deliver an remarkably compelling blend of the metallic sound of electronic keyboards and drum machines with her fluid Indian classical vocal technique. Drum machine patterns echoes the undulating tones of the tabla, while synth lines doubles the traditional sound of the harmonium on tracks such as Pyar Mainu Kar. Elsewhere, bossa nova rhythm comes to the fore on Soniya Mukh Tera, and Nainan Da Pyar De Gaya boasts a up-tempo funky bass rhythm. It's a dancefloor fusion created more than ten years before the rise of Asian Underground music.

Number Five: The Mongolian Artist Enji – Resonance

Mongolian vocalist Enji's gentle new release, Sonor, expands on her jazz-influenced sound to offer some of her most diverse music to date. Stepping outside her background in traditional Mongolian "long song" singing, the record's 11 tracks veer from the gentle Norah Jones-esque melodics of downtempo number Ulbar to the German-language narration lyrics and trilling guitar lines of Unadag Dugui. The album also includes a sprightly, funk-inflected cover of the 1980s Mongolian classic Eejiinhee Hairaar. Showcasing a live band rather than her standard setup of guitar and bass, Sonor's sound is still personal, drawing the listener into the gentle acoustics of her distinctive voice.

4. Derya Yıldırım and Her Band – If There Is No Tomorrow

Channeling the psychedelic tradition of Turkish psychedelia pioneered by groups such as Moğollar, Turkish-born, Germany-based singer Derya Yıldırım's new album with her band Grup Şimşek blends the distinctive buzz of the amplified traditional lute with drifting Mellotron and R&B-inflected lines. It's a retro-70s aesthetic rooted in Yıldırım's commanding falsetto and influenced by producer Leon Michels' warm, tape-saturated aesthetic. Yet, on Turkish standards such as the folk tune Hop Bico and 1960s song Ceylan, the group reaches lively new territory. They develop smooth, downtempo grooves and soaring vocals that impart a fresh, quirky interpretation to the Anatolian psychedelic style.

Number Three: The Colombian Artist Lido Pimienta – La Belleza

Gregorian chants, Czech harpsichord folksong and orchestral strings all come together on Colombian-born singer Lido Pimienta's extraordinary fourth album. Arranging music for the sixty-member Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra, Pimienta and producer Owen Pallett traverse everything from the Gregorian chants of opener Overturn (Obertura de la Luz Eterna) to the theatrical counterpoint melodies of Aún Te Quiero and the rhythmic reggaeton-inspired beats of the woodwind-heavy El Dembow del Tiempo.
