Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
